Hobart is known for nature, historic sites, shopping, wildlife, and parks. Your plan includes some of its best attractions: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Wellington, steep yourself in history at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, admire the natural beauty at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, and take an in-depth tour of Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Melbourne to Hobart is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of ferry and car; or do a combination of ferry and bus. Traveling from Melbourne in December, expect nights in Hobart to be about the same, around 13°C, while days are slightly colder, around 24°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 29th (Sun) so you can drive to Port Arthur.

Kick off your visit on the 30th (Mon): don't miss a visit to Remarkable Cave, get to know the fascinating history of Port Arthur Historic Site, and then steep yourself in history at Australian Convict Sites. On the next day, get engrossed in the history at Eaglehawk Neck Historic Site, then identify plant and animal life at Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Three Capes Track.

Drive from Hobart to Port Arthur in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In December, daily temperatures in Port Arthur can reach 24°C, while at night they dip to 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 31st (Tue) early enough to drive to Coles Bay.
