Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Get in touch with nature at Cataract Gorge Reserve and Lilydale Falls. Delamere Vineyards and Entally House are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get out of town with these interesting Launceston side-trips: Sidmouth (Loira Vines & Wines for Joanie), 3 Willows Vineyard (in Meander) and Tasmania’s Town of Murals (in Sheffield). There's still lots to do: do a tasting at Bell & Gong and shop like a local with Design Inn.

Sydney to Launceston is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of train, ferry, and bus. Traveling from Sydney in September, expect Launceston to be slightly colder, temps between 17°C and 4°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Thu) to allow time to drive to St Helens.

On the 4th (Fri), play a few rounds at Cerise Brook Orchard and Family Golf Course and then kick back and relax at Bay of Fires Conservation Area.

You can drive from Launceston to St Helens in 2.5 hours. In October, plan for daily highs up to 19°C, and evening lows to 5°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Fri) so you can drive to Coles Bay.

Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Cascade Brewery are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Visit South Cape Bay and Kingston Beach for some beach relaxation. Change things up with these side-trips from Hobart: Port Arthur Historic Site (in Port Arthur), Nutpatch Handmade Fine Chocolate (in Kettering) and Nonesuch Distillery (in Sorell). There's much more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, shop like a local with Salamanca Market, examine the collection at Museum of Old and New Art, and enjoy the sand and surf at Seven Mile Beach.
