A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Step out of the city life by going to Scuba & Snorkeling and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures. Step out of Cairns to go to Palm Cove and see Palm Cove Beach, which is approximately 32 minutes away. There's still lots to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Esplanade Boardwalk, tour the water at your own pace with Shaolin Junk Cruises, and enjoy the sand and surf at Trinity Beach.

Getting from Airlie Beach to Cairns by combination of ferry and flight takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and flight; or drive. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Airlie Beach in June: highs in Cairns hover around 30°C, while lows dip to 22°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 5th (Tue) so you can travel to Cape Tribulation.
