A low-rise, laid-back town of approximately 4,500 inhabitants, Margaret River serves as an ideal local base to explore the surrounding wine region.

Albany

Founded as a military outpost in 1826, Albany is the oldest town in Western Australia, just barely gaining this title by being settled two years earlier than Fremantle and Perth.
Kick off your visit on the 6th (Tue): take in the dramatic natural features at The Gap and Natural Bridge, then get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, then examine the collection at National Anzac Centre, and finally pause for some photo ops at Desert Mounted Corps Memorial. A relaxed town of tree-shaded streets and scenic coastal stretches, Broome gained renown as a center of the pearling industry in the late 19th century.
Spend the 9th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's lots more to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Cable Beach, get engrossed in the history at Broome Historical Museum, explore the different monuments and memorials at Japanese Cemetery, and explore the striking landscape at Gantheaume Point.

Traveling from Albany in August, you will find days in Broome are much hotter (36°C), and nights are a bit warmer (17°C).
