A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Venture out of the city with trips to Port Douglas (Safaris & Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas), Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove) and Rex Lookout (in Wangetti). Spend the 30th (Wed) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's lots more to do: stroll through Esplanade Boardwalk, have fun at Esplanade Lagoon Pool, enjoy unforgettable views with a balloon tour, and look for gifts at Cairns Central Shopping Centre.

Step out of Gold Coast to go to Brisbane and see Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, which is approximately 1h 30 min away. The adventure continues: find something for the whole family at Sea World Theme Park, take in panoramic vistas at SkyPoint Observation Deck, get outside with Pelican Feeding, and tee off at Surfers Paradise Golf Club.

Step out of Melbourne to go to Torquay and see The Great Ocean Road, which is approximately 1h 40 min away. Dedicate the 12th (Tue) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's lots more to do: admire the natural beauty at Royal Botanic Gardens, contemplate the long history of Old Melbourne Gaol, admire the masterpieces at National Gallery of Victoria, and stroll through Melbourne Zoo.
