A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Get outdoors at Palm Cove Beach and Daintree National Park. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas and Trinity Beach. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Cairns: Agincourt Reef (in Port Douglas) and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (in Kuranda). Spend the 7th (Thu) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's much more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Mossman Gorge, enjoy unforgettable views with a balloon tour, take in nature's colorful creations at Botanical Gardens, and enjoy some diversion at Muddy's Playground.
