The state of Victoria crown jewel, Melbourne boasts shaded streets, leafy residential neighborhoods, vibrant street life, and a picturesque city center.
Get outdoors at Royal Botanic Gardens and St. Kilda Beach. For shopping fun, head to Melbourne Central or Buxton Contemporary. Go for a jaunt from Melbourne to Werribee to see Werribee Open Range Zoo about 42 minutes away. There's still lots to do: learn about all things military at Shrine of Remembrance, explore the world behind art at FortyFiveDownstairs, browse the exhibits of Blender Studios, and steep yourself in history at Old Melbourne Gaol.

Change things up with these side-trips from Gold Coast: Brisbane (Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Museum of Brisbane, & more), The Treat Shop (in Eagle Heights) and Moffat Beach (in Caloundra). Spend the 5th (Thu) exploring the fascinating underwater world at Sea World Theme Park.
