A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Kick off your visit on the 21st (Sun): discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour. On the next day, have fun at Esplanade Lagoon Pool, trek along Esplanade Boardwalk, and then admire the natural beauty at Botanical Gardens.

Cape Tribulation

A lush headland that's part of the forested Daintree Region, Cape Tribulation was so named by Lieutenant--later Captain--Cook in 1770, when his ship ran aground in the area.
Take a break from Cape Tribulation with a short trip to Floravilla Ice Cream Factory in Daintree, about 44 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: identify plant and animal life at Daintree Rainforest - Cooper Creek Wilderness, stroll through Thornton Beach, hike along Dubuji Boardwalk, and enjoy the sand and surf at Cape Tribulation Beach.

You can take a bus from Cairns to Cape Tribulation in 3.5 hours. Another option is to drive. April in Cape Tribulation sees daily highs of 85°F and lows of 71°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 25th (Thu) so you can travel to Port Douglas.

Airlie Beach

Very much a town with an emphasis on the tropical lifestyle, Airlie Beach offers exotic surroundings with palm trees and charming, sandy beaches.
On the 29th (Mon), spend a thrilling day on the water with a speed boat tour. Spend the 30th (Tue) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's lots more to do: zoom along the surf with a waterskiing or jet-skiing adventure, enjoy the sand and surf at Airlie Beach Lagoon, and take in the pleasant sights at Coral Beach and the Beak, Conway National Park.
