Founded as a military outpost in 1826, Albany is the oldest town in Western Australia, just barely gaining this title by being settled two years earlier than Fremantle and Perth.
Explore hidden gems such as Anvil Beach and Lowlands Beach. Your inner history buff will appreciate Princess Royal Fortress and The Albany Convict Gaol & Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Albany side-trips: Denmark (Elephant Rocks & Lights Beach) and The Denmark Heritage Cider Company (in Scotsdale). And it doesn't end there: kick back and relax at Nanarup Beach, explore and take pictures at Replica of the Brig Amity, admire the masterpieces at Vancouver Arts Centre, and stroll through Goode Beach.

Perth to Albany is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Perth in January, things will get a bit cooler in Albany: highs are around 29°C and lows about 16°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 6th (Sun) early enough to go by car to Esperance.

Esperance is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, on the Southern Ocean coastline approximately 720km east-southeast of the state capital, Perth. Cindy Poole Glass Gallery and Esperance Stonehenge are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Escape the urban bustle at Thistle Cove and Ten Mile Lagoon. The adventure continues: enjoy the sand and surf at Blue Haven Beach, don't miss a visit to Ten Mile Lagoon Wind Farm, stroll through Hellfire Bay, and stop by Mermaid Leather.

Drive from Albany to Esperance in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or take a bus. In January, daytime highs in Esperance are 32°C, while nighttime lows are 17°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) so you can travel to Mandurah.

Mandurah

Mandurah is a coastal city in Western Australia, situated approximately 72km south of the state capital, Perth. On the 10th (Thu), tour the pleasant surroundings at Silver Sands Beach, identify plant and animal life at Point Peron, and then contemplate the long history of Old Blythewood. Here are some ideas for day two: explore the galleries of Glen Cowans' Studio at the Roundhouse, contemplate the long history of The Fremantle Round House, explore the world behind art at Fremantle Arts Centre, take in the exciting artwork at Emma Blyth Gallery, then appreciate the history behind Mandurah War Memorial, and finally take a tour by water with Boat Tours & Water Sports.

Traveling by combination of flight and train from Esperance to Mandurah takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Plan for somewhat warmer temperatures traveling from Esperance in January, with highs in Mandurah at 38°C and lows at 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to Margaret River.

A low-rise, laid-back town of approximately 4,500 inhabitants, Margaret River serves as an ideal local base to explore the surrounding wine region.
Get in touch with nature at Surfers Point and Sugarloaf Rock. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Hamelin Bay Jetty and Water wheel.
