Launceston

Launceston ©
Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Venture out of the city with trips to Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre (in Beaconsfield) and Beauty Point (Seahorse World & Platypus House). There's lots more to do: identify plant and animal life at Cataract Gorge Reserve, stop by Gourlay's Sweet Shop, stroll around Prince's Square, and make a trip to The Town Clock.

For where to stay, other places to visit, photos, and tourist information, use the Launceston route planner.

Townsville to Launceston is an approximately 8.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of bus, train, and ferry. Traveling from Townsville in August, expect Launceston to be much colder, temps between 13°C and 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Thu) early enough to drive to Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park.
