A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Spy & Camera Museum and The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Family-friendly places like Scuba & Snorkeling and Safaris will thrill your kids. Change things up with a short trip to The Crystal Caves in Atherton (about 1h 10 min away). There's much more to do: identify plant and animal life at Atherton Tablelands, head off the coast to Michaelmas Cay, and take in the dramatic scenery at Josephine Falls.

Dresden, Germany to Cairns is an approximately 27-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 9 hours traveling from Dresden to Cairns. In July in Cairns, expect temperatures between 30°C during the day and 20°C at night. Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Get some cultural insight at Boggo Road Gaol and Cathedral Square. Popular historic sites such as Catholic Old St. Stephen's Church (chapel) and Newstead House are in your itinerary. Change things up with a short trip to Sea World Theme Park in Main Beach (about 1h 30 min away). There's much more to do: identify plant and animal life at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, stroll around South Bank Parklands, and pause for some serene contemplation at St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

You can fly from Cairns to Brisbane in 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. Traveling from Cairns in July, things will get a bit cooler in Brisbane: highs are around 24°C and lows about 11°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 29th (Mon) so you can travel to Sydney.

Your inner history buff will appreciate The Rocks and Nan Tien Temple. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Sydney Opera House and Australian National Maritime Museum.
