Take a break from the city and head to Wategos Beach and Pat Morton Lookout. Get a sense of the local culture at Cape Byron Lighthouse and Bexhill Open Air Cathedral. Get out of town with these interesting Byron Bay side-trips: Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome Heritage Aviation Museum (in Evans Head), Summerland House Farm (in Alstonville) and Lighthouse Beach (in Ballina). Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
You'll get in some beach time at Dicky Beach and Shorncliffe Beach. Do some cultural sightseeing at Catholic Old St. Stephen's Church (chapel) and ScienCentre. Change things up with a short trip to The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich (about 42 minutes away). Spend the 2nd (Thu) observing fascinating marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour. There's much more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at St Andrews Uniting Church, Brisbane, enjoy some diversion at South Bank Parklands, and find something for the whole family at Wheel of Brisbane.
