A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Relax by the water at Palm Cove Beach and Trinity Beach. Get outdoors at Scuba & Snorkeling and Esplanade Boardwalk. Go for a jaunt from Cairns to Kuranda to see Australian Butterfly Sanctuary about 36 minutes away. There's still lots to do: have fun at Esplanade Lagoon Pool and admire the natural beauty at Botanical Gardens.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Torquay to Cairns takes 7 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Traveling from Torquay in December, expect Cairns to be somewhat warmer, temps between 36°C and 26°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Port Douglas.
