A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Step off the beaten path and head to Curtain Fig National Park and Granite Gorge Nature Park. Get some cultural insight at Historic Village Herberton and St Monica's Cathedral. Change things up with these side-trips from Cairns: Spy & Camera Museum (in Herberton), Palm Cove (Spas & Wellness & Kayaking & Canoeing) and Kuranda (Birdworld Kuranda & Australian Butterfly Sanctuary). There's lots more to do: identify plant and animal life at Atherton Tablelands, tour the pleasant surroundings at Trinity Beach, discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, and have some family-friendly fun at Cairns Kart Hire Track.

Ubud, Indonesia to Cairns is an approximately 8-hour combination of bus and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 2 hours traveling from Ubud to Cairns. Traveling from Ubud in August, Cairns is a bit cooler at night with lows of 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Wed) so you can drive to Darwin.

The smallest of Australia’s state capitals, Darwin has nevertheless become an attractive and important urban center, being simultaneously one of the country’s most modernized cities and a gateway to both the Top End region and South East Asia.
Get some cultural insight at RFDS Darwin Tourist Facility and Adelaide River War Cemetery. Step off the beaten path and head to Territory Wildlife Park and Fishing Charters & Tours. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Darwin: Crazy Acres (in Berry Springs), Litchfield National Park (Wangi Falls, Buley Rockhole, & more) and Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve (in Humpty Doo). Spend the 14th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. Spend the 12th (Wed) exploring nature at Charles Darwin National Park. There's lots more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at East Point Reserve, take in the exciting artwork at Outstation Gallery - Aboriginal Art from Art Centres, take in the architecture and atmosphere at St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Cathedral, and experience rural life at Batchelor Butterfly Farm and Pet Garden.

Drive from Cairns to Darwin in 29 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Cairns in September, with highs in Darwin at 38°C and lows at 26°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Sat) so you can travel back home.
