The smallest of Australia’s state capitals, Darwin has nevertheless become an attractive and important urban center, being simultaneously one of the country’s most modernized cities and a gateway to both the Top End region and South East Asia.
Explore hidden gems such as Parliament House and Star Village. Get some cultural insight at RFDS Darwin Tourist Facility and Aboriginal Fine Arts Gallery. Go for a jaunt from Darwin to Humpty Doo to see Didgeridoo Hut & Art Gallery about 34 minutes away. There's still lots to do: look for all kinds of wild species at East Point Reserve, see the world from above with a helicopter tour, cool off at Darwin Waterfront, and take in nature's colorful creations at George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens.

Cairns to Darwin is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Cairns in July, plan for somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Darwin: temperatures range from 36°C by day to 22°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sun) so you can travel to Gunbalanya.
