A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Botanical Gardens and Trinity Beach. Go for a jaunt from Cairns to Port Douglas to see Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas about 1h 15 min away. Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and Battery Point Sculpture Trail. Change things up with a short trip to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton (about 30 minutes away). On the 12th (Tue), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, take a leisurely stroll along Constitution Dock, snap pictures at Richmond Bridge, and see the interesting displays at Mawson's Hut Replica Museum.

Fly from Sydney to Hobart in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. In March, Hobart is little chillier than Sydney - with highs of 25°C and lows of 13°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Wed) early enough to go by car to Coles Bay.

Coles Bay

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
On the 14th (Thu), make a trip to Bicheno Blowhole, get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Wineglass Bay Lookout. Founded as a military outpost in 1826, Albany is the oldest town in Western Australia, just barely gaining this title by being settled two years earlier than Fremantle and Perth.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to National Anzac Centre and Greens Pool. Step out of Albany with an excursion to Cheynes Beach in Waychinicup National Park--about 50 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: explore the striking landscape at The Gap and Natural Bridge, enjoy the sand and surf at Misery Beach, make a trip to Albany Wind Farm, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Little Beach.
