Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
You'll get in some beach time at Moffat Beach and Dicky Beach. There's still lots to do: identify plant and animal life at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, admire the natural beauty at Roma Street Parkland, take some stellar pictures from Mount Coot-tha Lookout, and let little ones run wild at South Bank Parklands.

Drive from Gold Coast to Brisbane in an hour. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or take a train. In January, plan for daily highs up to 34°C, and evening lows to 25°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to travel to Cairns.

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Visiting Scuba & Snorkeling and Trinity Beach will get you outdoors. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Palm Cove (Hartley's Crocodile Adventures & Palm Cove Beach) and Safaris (in Port Douglas). There's much more to do: hike along Esplanade Boardwalk, take a memorable tour with Tours, look for gifts at Cairns Central Shopping Centre, and pause for some photo ops at Cairns Cenotaph.
