A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Take a break from the city and head to Scuba & Snorkeling and Safaris. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Palm Cove Beach and Yorkeys Knob Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove), Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery (in Mossman) and Daintree Rainforest - Cooper Creek Wilderness (in Cape Tribulation). The adventure continues: enjoy the sand and surf at Trinity Beach, tour the pleasant surroundings at Esplanade Boardwalk, pause for some photo ops at Cairns Cenotaph, and look for all kinds of wild species at The Jack Barnes Bicentennial Mangrove Boardwalk.

Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Get some cultural insight at Queensland Art Gallery and West End. Step out of the city life by going to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and Surfer's Paradise Beach. When in Brisbane, make a side trip to see Marina Mirage in Main Beach, approximately 1h 35 min away. There's much more to do: stroll through Burleigh Heads Beach, enjoy the sand and surf at Moffat Beach, let little ones run wild at South Bank Parklands, and take some stellar pictures from Mount Coot-tha Lookout.

Traveling from Cairns in January, expect nights in Brisbane to be about the same, around 25°C, while days are a bit cooler, around 34°C.
