The smallest of Australia’s state capitals, Darwin has nevertheless become an attractive and important urban center, being simultaneously one of the country’s most modernized cities and a gateway to both the Top End region and South East Asia.
Visit Adelaide River War Cemetery and The Old Town Hall for their historical value. Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and Darwin Aviation Museum will appeal to museum buffs. Venture out of the city with trips to Litchfield National Park (in Batchelor) and Territory Wildlife Park (in Berry Springs). Spend the 2nd (Tue) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. Spend the 7th (Sun) on the water with a fishing tour. There's much more to do: examine the collection at Defence of Darwin Experience, browse the exhibits of Outstation Gallery - Aboriginal Art from Art Centres, take a leisurely stroll along Darwin Wharf Precinct, and view the masterpieces at Provenance Arts.

Melbourne to Darwin is an approximately 6-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. In July, Darwin is much hotter than Melbourne - with highs of 36°C and lows of 22°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Wed) early enough to travel to Brisbane.

Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Queensland Museum & Sciencentre and Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre will appeal to museum buffs. Get some historical perspective at Chenrezig Institute and Caloundra Lighthouses. Venture out of the city with trips to Mapleton Observatory (in Mapleton), Caloundra Regional Art Gallery (in Caloundra) and Sunshine Castle (in Bli Bli). Spend the 15th (Mon) exploring the fascinating underwater world at Sea World Theme Park. There's lots more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, take in the spiritual surroundings of Old St Stephen's Catholic Church (Pugin Chapel), tour the pleasant surroundings at Australia Zoo, and let little ones run wild at South Bank Parklands.

Getting from Darwin to Brisbane by flight takes about 6 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Darwin in July, things will get little chillier in Brisbane: highs are around 24°C and lows about 11°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 22nd (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
