A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Trinity Beach and St Monica's Cathedral. Take a break from Cairns with a short trip to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures in Palm Cove, about 44 minutes away. Spend the 16th (Mon) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's lots more to do: hike along Esplanade Boardwalk, enjoy some diversion at Esplanade Lagoon Pool, look for all kinds of wild species at Michaelmas Cay, and relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour.
