A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Historic Village Herberton and Underart Gallery. Get in touch with nature at Scuba & Snorkeling and Nature & Wildlife Tours. When in Cairns, make a side trip to see Palm Cove Beach in Palm Cove, approximately 32 minutes away. There's lots more to do: hike along Esplanade Boardwalk, look for all kinds of wild species at Atherton Tableland, and explore the striking landscape at Earl Hill.

A lush headland that's part of the forested Daintree Region, Cape Tribulation was so named by Lieutenant--later Captain--Cook in 1770, when his ship ran aground in the area.
Visiting Daintree Discovery Centre and Myall Beach will get you outdoors. Step out of Cape Tribulation to go to Cow Bay and see Walu Wugirriga Lookout, which is approximately 42 minutes away. Spend the 10th (Sat) exploring nature at Daintree National Park. There's lots more to do: trek along Dubuji Boardwalk, enjoy the sand and surf at Thornton Beach, get a new perspective on nature at Daintree Entomological museum, and take in the dramatic scenery at Alexandra Bay Waterfall.
