A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Head to Coffee Works and Funstuff by Lyndafor some retail therapy. Visiting Scuba & Snorkeling and Four Mile Beach will get you outdoors. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Sunday Market Port Douglas (in Port Douglas) and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove). Very much a town with an emphasis on the tropical lifestyle, Airlie Beach offers exotic surroundings with palm trees and charming, sandy beaches.
Step out of the city life by going to Scuba & Snorkeling and Waterskiing & Jetskiing. Visit Airlie Beach Lagoon and Horseshoe Bay for some beach relaxation. Step out of Airlie Beach to go to Bowen and see The Big Mango, which is approximately 46 minutes away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Heart Reef, hunt for treasures at Lions Airlie Beach Markets, and add some adventure to your tour with a kayaking and canoeing tour.

You'll get in some beach time at Burleigh Heads Beach and Surfer's Paradise Beach. For shopping fun, head to Pacific Fair Shopping Centre or Harbour Town Outlet Shopping Centre. Take a break from the city and head to Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Venture out of the city with trips to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (Walpa Gorge & Valley of the Winds). There's still lots to do: trek along Kuniya Walk, identify plant and animal life at Red Desert Reptiles, see the world from above with a helicopter tour, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Uluru Hiking Path.
