A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Visiting Palm Cove Beach and Mossman Gorge will get you outdoors. Step off the beaten path and head to Trinity Beach and Agincourt Reef. Venture out of the city with trips to Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (in Kuranda), Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery (in Mossman) and Cape Tribulation (Daintree National Park & Daintree Rainforest - Cooper Creek Wilderness). Spend the 2nd (Sun) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Spend the 9th (Sun) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's lots more to do: get curious at Daintree Discovery Centre, take in nature's colorful creations at Botanical Gardens, view the masterpieces at Bones and Jones, and meet the residents at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas.
