A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Get outdoors at Scuba & Snorkeling and Safaris. You'll get in some beach time at Palm Cove Beach and Four Mile Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Daintree National Park (in Cape Tribulation), Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas (in Port Douglas) and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove). Named after Lord Byron's grandfather, Byron Bay is not only famous as the easternmost point of Australia, but even more so as one of the liveliest vacation spots in the country.
Get outdoors at Broken Head Beach and Belongil Beach. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Lennox Head Beach and Wategos Beach. Change things up with a short trip to Lighthouse Beach in Ballina (about 36 minutes away). Spend the 1st (Fri) exploring nature at Arakwal National Park.
