A low-rise, laid-back town of approximately 4,500 inhabitants, Margaret River serves as an ideal local base to explore the surrounding wine region.
Step out of the city life by going to Gnarabup Beach and Yallingup Beach. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Dolphin & Whale Watching and Food Tours. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Margaret River: Augusta (Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse & Jewel Cave), Meelup Beach (in Dunsborough) and Ngilgi Cave (in Yallingup). Founded as a military outpost in 1826, Albany is the oldest town in Western Australia, just barely gaining this title by being settled two years earlier than Fremantle and Perth.
Get outdoors at Emu Point and Elephant Rocks. You'll get in some beach time at Middleton Beach and Greens Pool. When in Albany, make a side trip to see Tree Top Walk in Walpole, approximately 1h 40 min away. The adventure continues: see the interesting displays at National Anzac Centre, kick back and relax at Little Beach, pause for some photo ops at Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, and get engrossed in the history at Albany's Historic Whaling Station.
