The state of Victoria crown jewel, Melbourne boasts shaded streets, leafy residential neighborhoods, vibrant street life, and a picturesque city center.
You'll get in some beach time at St. Kilda Beach and Half Moon Bay. Visit Shrine of Remembrance and Old Melbourne Gaol for their historical value. Explore Melbourne's surroundings by going to Sovereign Hill (in Ballarat), National Vietnam Veterans Museum (in Newhaven) and The Great Ocean Road (in Torquay). There's still lots to do: admire the natural beauty at Royal Botanic Gardens, meet the residents at Werribee Open Range Zoo, enjoy the sand and surf at Cape Woolamai Beach, and stroll through Melbourne Zoo.

Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Melbourne in March since evenings lows in Sydney dip to 22°C. Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Get a sense of the local culture at Queensland Museum & Sciencentre and Atrium Gallery at Buderim Craft Cottage. Step out of the city life by going to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and Mooloolaba Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Surfer's Paradise Beach (in Surfers Paradise), Pelican Feeding (in Labrador) and Caloundra Lighthouses (in Kings Beach). Spend the 11th (Sat) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's still lots to do: let the kids burn off some steam at South Bank Parklands, take some stellar pictures from Mount Coot-tha Lookout, enjoy the sand and surf at Kings Beach, and contemplate the waterfront views at The Brisbane River.
