A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Visit Trinity Beach and Yorkeys Knob Beach for some beach relaxation. Head to Tanks Arts Centre and DFO Cairns, Direct Factory Outletsfor plenty of shopping. Take a break from Cairns with a short trip to Historic Village Herberton in Herberton, about 1h 30 min away. Spend the 17th (Thu) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Spend the 21st (Mon) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's still lots to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at St Monica's Cathedral, trek along Esplanade Boardwalk, stop by Australian Leather Company, and buy something for everyone on your list at Stockland Cairns Shopping Centre.

A lush headland that's part of the forested Daintree Region, Cape Tribulation was so named by Lieutenant--later Captain--Cook in 1770, when his ship ran aground in the area.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Daintree Discovery Centre and Daintree Entomological museum. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Myall Beach and Cow Bay Beach. Step out of Cape Tribulation to go to Cooktown and see Grassy Hill, which is approximately 1h 40 min away. Spend the 25th (Fri) exploring nature at Daintree National Park. There's much more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Daintree Rainforest - Cooper Creek Wilderness, admire the sheer force of Alexandra Bay Waterfall, kick back and relax at Cape Tribulation Beach, and get great views at Walu Wugirriga Lookout.
