Melbourne to Launceston is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of ferry and car. Prepare for a bit cooler weather when traveling from Melbourne in December: high temperatures in Launceston hover around 25°C and lows are around 10°C. Start off your visit on the 14th (Fri): look for all kinds of wild species at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, then see the interesting displays at Mona, and then get to know the fascinating history of Battery Point Sculpture Trail. Keep things going the next day: take in the awesome beauty at Mount Wellington, then steep yourself in history at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, then get a taste of the local shopping with Salamanca Market, and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Seven Mile Beach.

Traveling by car from Launceston to Hobart takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In December, daily temperatures in Hobart can reach 24°C, while at night they dip to 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Sat) to allow time to drive to Port Arthur.
