Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
When in Hobart, make a side trip to see Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton, approximately 30 minutes away. On the 2nd (Fri), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, get curious at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, examine the collection at Museum of Old and New Art, and take in the pleasant sights at Battery Point Sculpture Trail.

Melbourne to Hobart is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of ferry and car; or do a combination of ferry and bus. August in Hobart sees daily highs of 15°C and lows of 4°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sun) so you can drive to Port Arthur.
