Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Thu): see the interesting displays at Mawson's Hut Replica Museum and then enjoy the sand and surf at Opossum Bay Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: look for all kinds of wild species at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, examine the collection at Mona, then enjoy the sand and surf at Bellerive Beach, and finally take in the waterfront at Constitution Dock.

Sydney to Hobart is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Traveling from Sydney in January, things will get slightly colder in Hobart: highs are around 26°C and lows about 14°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 4th (Fri) so you can go by car to Port Arthur.

Coles Bay

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Freycinet National Park and East Coast Natureworld. Take a break from the city and head to Nature & Wildlife Tours and Freycinet Marine Farm. There's lots more to do: walk along Wineglass Bay Lookout, learn about winemaking at Gala Estate Vineyard, and enjoy the sea views from Cape Tourville Lighthouse.
