Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Tue): look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve and then explore the galleries of Tasmanian Glassblowers. Keep things going the next day: look for gifts at Goaty Hill Wines, then get engrossed in the history at Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre, then view the masterpieces at Design Centre Tasmania, and finally stroll through City Park.

Melbourne to Launceston is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of ferry and car. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Melbourne in January, with highs in Launceston at 28°C and lows at 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Wed) so you can drive to Coles Bay.

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
Get in touch with nature at Wineglass Bay Lookout and Spiky Beach Conservation Area. When in Coles Bay, make a side trip to see Melshell Oysters in Swansea, approximately 46 minutes away. Spend the 18th (Fri) exploring nature at Freycinet National Park. There's lots more to do: get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, take a leisurely stroll along Coles Bay Jetty, experience rural life at Freycinet Marine Farm, and do a tasting at Devil's Corner Cellar Door.

You can drive from Launceston to Coles Bay in 2.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of bus and car; or do a combination of bus and taxi. Cap off your sightseeing on the 19th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Hobart.

Drive from Coles Bay to Hobart in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and bus. In January, daily temperatures in Hobart can reach 26°C, while at night they dip to 14°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Tue) to allow time to travel back home.
