Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Bring the kids along to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. There's lots more to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Wellington, take in nature's colorful creations at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, see the interesting displays at Museum of Old and New Art, and go for a walk through Battery Point Sculpture Trail.

Sydney to Hobart is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Prepare for a bit cooler weather when traveling from Sydney in January: high temperatures in Hobart hover around 26°C and lows are around 14°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Sun) to allow time to drive to Port Arthur.
