Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
On the 20th (Thu), look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve and then stop by Gourlay's Sweet Shop. On the 21st (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: contemplate the long history of Woolmers Estate, then contemplate the long history of Entally Estate, then stop by Goaty Hill Wines, and finally take in the exciting artwork at Design Centre Tasmania.

Melbourne to Launceston is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of ferry and car. Traveling from Melbourne in December, things will get little chillier in Launceston: highs are around 25°C and lows about 10°C. Get some historical perspective at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site and Battery Point Sculpture Trail. We've included these beaches for you: Long Beach and Bellerive Beach. Step out of Hobart with an excursion to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton--about 30 minutes away. There's lots more to do: get a taste of the local shopping with Salamanca Market, head off the coast to Macquarie Island, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Wellington, and see the interesting displays at Mona.
