Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Start off your visit on the 4th (Mon): look for all kinds of wild species at Platypus House, explore the galleries of Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre, then look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at The Pilgrim Uniting Church. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: admire the landmark architecture of Franklin House, then steep yourself in history at Woolmers Estate, then examine the collection at National Automobile Museum of Tasmania, and finally admire the verdant scenery at The Tamar Valley.

Melbourne to Launceston is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of ferry and car. In November, Launceston is slightly colder than Melbourne - with highs of 67°F and lows of 45°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Wed) so you can go by car to Port Arthur.
